Overview of Tangram Garden

Tangram Garden would like to welcome you to Siem Reap, the gateway to the majestic temples of Angkor Wat. Located in the Northwest of Cambodia, Siem Reap is actually a town build up of several small fishing villages that used to exist along the Siem Reap River and the Tonle Sap Lake. Nowadays the town is a bustling tourism centre with an abundance of variety in terms of hotels, restaurants and activities.

Through all the tourism activities the town has never lost its appeal as a small provincial capital. It is still very much a pleasant and spacious town with the Old Market area being the centre of it all with its colonial style shop houses. When in 1863 Cambodia became a protectorate of France, Siem Reap developed quickly and became together with Battambang the Rice Bowl of Cambodia. The country eventually gained its independence in 1953 and like the rest of Cambodia, Siem Reap faced tremendous challenges afterwards of which the most notable would be the Khmer Rouge period between 1975 and 1979.

Nowadays, Siem Reap is one of Cambodia’s most thriving provincial capitals. However, the province itself remains one of the country’s poorest. Tourism is the town’s main source of income where the remainder of the province is primarily dependent on rural activities and fishing. Siem Reap is also the basis from where to explore the Great Tonle Sap Lake. The floating villages that surround the town are like nowhere else in the world. Together with temples dating back to three different Kingdoms, an abundance of wildlife and other natural attractions, Siem Reap is a perfect place to explore the rich past, pleasant present and promising future of Cambodia, of which Tangram Garden is proud to be part of!

Restaurant & Lounge

A restaurant is a restaurant you may think but Tangram Garden is different in many ways. Walk over our bridge and find yourself in a haven of tranquility and authenticity while following the paths lit by bamboo torches. Spot our ox carts, dug out palm canoes, traditional rice mill, and large ceramic pots.

The difference starts with our service. Upon arrival, our host or hostess will guide you towards your preferred seating area and hand over your menu’s as usual. You may let the host or hostess know your preference regarding interaction and encourage the host or hostess to interact with you outside of the general restaurant talks.

Our staff is very knowledgeable and can help you out with any questions you may have about Cambodia. They can walk you around the property while waiting for your dishes and explain more about the rural Cambodian culture that is on display in our garden or explain more about the Cambodian culture in general and give tips for further travels. We may teach you the game of Tangram or explain the traditional architecture of Cambodia by visiting our playground where a scaled model of a traditional house is used as a centerpiece of our playground.

The open air concept caters to many people’s needs to be outdoors. Cambodia’s climate encourages outdoor activities and dining instead of being constantly surrounded by air conditioned rooms. Cambodians live outdoors and prepare, whenever possible their food outdoors on small ceramic grills. At Tangram Garden We wondered why people visiting Cambodia are not offered the opportunity to experience the local way of dining, which translates to being together in an intimate surrounding with the people you care for in the exact environment that you live. Tangram made that option available for you in a convenient way!

Dining is not all that we can cater to well. Our lounge is one of the most pleasant ones in town and offers a wonderful under the stars opportunity to enjoy a fresh juice or tasty cocktail. Being in the community where people generally go to sleep early allows you to quietly dream away and settle your thoughts without the noise of music, traffic, or fellow travelers surrounding you. Being on a beach holiday and enjoying an evening dinner on the beach may seem as essential as visiting Siem Reap and its temples and ponder away at Tangram Garden while surrounded by traditional wooden houses, tropical vegetation and utter Khmer hospitality.

Share your stories with our staff or fellow guests and chose to hang out on our comfortable bedding or wander around the garden finding yourself a good place to take in the atmosphere. We would like to leave the choice with you and make you feel at ease in a place that we consider our home!
