Old House Restaurant

Business Overview

Near Pub Street, 2 Thnou Street, Siem Reap, Cambodia

All in all, we had a very tasty meal and the waitress was highly attentive throughout (as you would expect with us being the only patrons!) If we had more time in Siem Reap then I would have loved to have paid Old House Restaurant a second visit to try and conquer the Khmer set menu with an emptier stomach. I can only hope that more people find their way to this remarkible restaurant as it does not deserve to have so many empty tables.

About Old House Restaurant, Siem Reap

Walking around the streets of Siem Reap at night can be an overwhelming experience that programs the phrase "Awtey Awkun" in to your head, as it becomes an auto-response to every question that gets fired your way from the countless touts, tuk-tuk drivers and masseuses. However, sitting amongst the madness on Hospital St is a quiet little restaurant that plays no tricks to pull you in other than displaying an interesting menu with a wide range of authentic Khmer dishes.

I was interested by the Khmer set menu, which seemed exceptional value for money at $6 for 3 courses. My stomach didn't seem up for the task of tackling 3 courses though so I went for a one course wonder with the Chicken Satay Skewers. My meal arrived with a generous offering of 6 expertly-cooked skewers and a pot of peanut sauce, which served as an excellent accompaniment to the chicken. I could have easily got through 3 pots of the peanut sauce as it even made the steamed rice taste like a work of art.

My partner was a bit stumped for options as there was not much in the way of vegetarian options. Fresh spring rolls or fried spring rolls are usually a good fall-back for her in all restaurants, but the waitress said that they were only available with meat. Nevertheless she ordered some fried egg noodles with vegetables, which had a interesting underlying heat from the chillies.
