Sangkheum Center for Children
Business Overview
Sangkheum Center for Children, Chey Village, Teukville Commune, Puok District, Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Since 2001 the Sangkheum Center for Children ('sangkheum' means 'hope' in the Khmer language) has been providing education, training, scholastic support and care to disadvantaged children and youth in Cambodia. We strive to provide a brighter future for orphaned, abused and neglected children who would otherwise be at risk of turning to a life on the streets.
Overview of Sangkheum Center for Children
The Sangkheum Center for Children was established as a co-operation between the Italian NGO Progetto Continenti and the Cambodian NGO Khmer Angkor Development Organization.
Progetto Continenti is a laic, non-confessional and non-profit NGO (non-governmental organization) for solidarity and international cooperation who have, since 1989, cooperated with partners and civil associations of developing countries carrying out development projects in education, professional training, health, human rights, local economy through small micro-credit projects and protection of the environment. The Sangkheum Center for Children is one of many successful projects we have created.
The Khmer Angkor Development Organization is a local NGO established in 1999, working within areas of education, health and rural development. KADO is the local partner of Progetto Continenti and together we have successfully conducted several projects to support and empower the people of Cambodia.
Our Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries of Sangkheum Center for Children are underprivileged children between the ages of 2 and 18 with a continued integration and work training support until the age of 19 through the Young Adults program.
The children end up in our care for a wide range of reasons. They have been abandoned in hospitals; subjects to human trafficking, abandoned on the streets or have been orphaned when parents have passed away in accidents, from diseases or from deadly violence.
Education of Sangkheum Center for Children
Public School
All children in our program are studying in or will be supported and reintegrated into the public school system. This will ensure that the children have the important opportunity to be educated within the Cambodian school system and learn how to read and write.
Supplementary Khmer Education
Many of the children in our program come from backgrounds where they have had limited or no access to education. To overcome this gap and to be able to follow the public school our educators run additional lessons in public school subjects for the children.
Recreational activities
Play and fun is a necessity in all children's life. We run a wide range of recreational activities including art, games and playful handicraft.
English language classes
Cambodia is a fast developing country and English is becoming an essential knowledge to have when applying for jobs or higher education. We run beginner and elementary English language classes to provide children the opportunity to combine their public school education with additional language skills.
The Silk Lab
The Silk Lab was set up in 2005 to create social and economical security to disadvantaged women living in Siem Reap through a fair trade, non-for profit business. The women, all coming from low income backgrounds and with low or non existing education, have been trained to become professional seamstresses, giving them the opportunity to take their future into their own hands by being employed and further trained in the Silk Lab or with their newly gained skills continue to a professional career in other businesses.
