The birding package tour with 10 days in Cambodia, our expert bird guide will help you find the rare birds and visiting some of the famous temples as well. This tour begins with the welcome at Siem Reap international airport and start the tour with Siem Reap’s Angkor Wat and Kbal Spean to wetlands of the Tonle Sap floodplains Prek Toal, Ang Trapeang Thmor, Florican Grassland, then continue to the dry dipterocarp forests (DDF) in the northern plains at Tmatboey, followed with Kratie and finish at the tailorbird shrub near Phnom Penh.
This 10-day tour we target these key species: Giant Ibis, White-shouldered Ibis, Pale-capped Pigeon, Bengal Florican, Manchurian Reed-warbler, Sarus Crane, Greater Adjutant, Milky Stork, Mekong Wagtail, Cambodian Tailorbird, and many other birds and mammals. With approximately 280 species expected on the list.
Day 1: Arrival Siem Reap
Arrive at Siem Reap International Airport and transfer to hotel. Stay in Siem Reap.
Day 2: Angkor – Birding through Culture and Nature
Our first birding hotspot is chasing around the temple of Angkor where you can combine with historical, cultural tour as it one of the world attractive sites for tourists. A full day tour of the Angkor temples includes the magnificent 12th century Angkor Wat, the fabulous Ta Prohm Temple, embraced by the roots of enormous fig trees and gigantic creepers, the mysterious Bayon Temple. Beside temple, you can explore some bird species such as White-throated Rock-thrush, Black-capped Kingfisher, Black Baza, Alexandrine, and Red-breasted parakeet, Hainan Blue and Taiga Flycatchers. Day 3: Kbal Spean – Birding through Culture and Nature
A combined tour for birding around Kbal Spean with dry Deciduous Forest which is good for a few hours birding, and then birding along the trekking up to Kbal Spean’s waterfall and thousand linga carvings in the riverbed. Plus visiting the Angkor Center for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB), a wildlife rescue for illegally hunted birds and animals, providing a refuge until they can be returned to the wild. And seeing Banteay Srey on the way back. Birds include Black-headed Woodpecker, Great Slaty Woodpecker, White-bellied Woodpecker, Burmese Nuthatch, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, etc. Stay in Siem Reap
Day 4: Prek Toal – Large Waterbird Colonies
An early start to transfer to Cambodia’s great lake, Tonle Sap. The day is spent birding at the Prek Toal Biosphere Reserve by boat and from watchtowers in the flooded forest. Prek Toal has one of the largest concentrations of waterbirds in South-East Asia with Oriental Darter, Spot-billed Pelican, Painted and Milky storks, Asian Openbill and Greater and Lesser adjutants among the species that can be seen. Return to Siem Reap in the late afternoon. The itinerary may vary depending on local conditions at Tonle Sap. Stay Siem Reap
Day 5: Ang Trapeang Thmor – Sarus Crane
Today our birding hotspot is going to the wetlands at Ang Trapeang Thmor to look for Sarus Crane, duck, Black-necked Storks, Greater Spotted Eagle, Milky Stork, Painted Stork, Oriental Plover, and many other species. One globally threatened species – the Eld’s deer (Rucervus eldii). About 200 bird species recorded in the reserve.Overnights at Siem Reap.
Day 6: Florican Grassland & Tmatboey
Our CBGA specialist bird guide will pick you up from Siem Reap at 5.30am. First driving to Florican Grassland located at the provincial border between Siem Reap and Kampong Thom. We will spend about 3 hours at this Tonle Sap flooded grassland to find the Critically Endangered Bengal Florican, the winter visitor Manchurian Reed-warbler, and many other birds about 40 species. Around 10.30am we will move and drive up north to have lunch at Beng Mealea temple. We then continue to Tmatboey – the flagship site situated in the Northern Plains, within the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary. Along the way near Koh Ker, we will try to the White-rumped Pygmy Falcon. By 3 pm we will arrive at Tmatboey. After check-in the room we will start birding near the lodge for the White-shouldered Ibis. The day tour finish after dusk, the group come back to the lodge for dinner and rest for the following day early rise.
Day 7: Tmatboey – Giant and White-shouldered Ibis and land of Woodpeckers
We start to leave at 4.30am with packed breakfast, go for the Giant Ibis roost. We will spend the whole morning also for other key species and come back for lunch and rest before the afternoon birding that start at 3 pm.
Beside the two critically endangered Giant and White-shouldered Ibis. Tmatbeoy also supports other target species such as Woolly-necked Stork, Black-headed woodpecker, White-rumped pygmy Falcon. The Pale-capped Pigeon is another highlight along with Night-birding is often productive; Spotted and Brown Wood Owls, Collared and Oriental Scops Owl, Brown Fish Owl and Spotted Owlet all being possible viewing at daytime. Day 8: Early Morning Birding Tmatboey; Visit Preah Vihear Temple; Back to Tmatboey
Today we will spend the morning birding Tmatboey, and we will spend time between 9.30am to 2.30pm to visit Preah Vihear Temple located on the top of the mountain, 90 minutes away from Tmatboey.
After back from the temple and rest, we still can do another late afternoon birding around Tmatboey for more species we have missed. Stay in Tmatboey
Day 9: Morning Birding Tmatboey; Transfer to Kratie
After our last morning birding, at 9 am we will leave Tmatboey for Kratie looking for Asian Golden Weaver, Mekong River Dolphin, Mekong Wagtail, and other wetland birds. Arriving in Kratie in the late afternoon. Stay in Kratie
Day 10: AM birding in Kratie; Tailorbird shrub; finish tour in Phnom Penh
For our last day tour, we will visit Kampi after breakfast and take a 90-minute river trip from Kratie to look for Irrawaddy Dolphins, Mekong Wagtail and other species like Small Pratincole along the Mekong River.Back to the hotel to check out, by 9.30am, we will travel to the Tailorbird shrub located near Phnom Penh. We will finish our 10-day tour either by drop you off in Phnom Penh capital city or travel back to Siem Reap.
