Depart from Phnom Penh to discover the ancient pre-Angkorian Capital City from the 5th-7th Century AD and the abandoned temple nestled in the village. Visit the Spider Market along the route.
Exploring Cambodia’s historic heartland is like stepping back in time. The journey begins with a hotel pick-up in Phnom Penh before heading out toward Kampong Thom Province. After passing through the city, the road soon narrows into a dirt path that leads to the ancient city of Chenla, once the capital of a powerful kingdom between the 5th and 7th centuries.
The highlight here is Sambor Prei Kuk, a sprawling temple complex built by King Isanavarman I and dedicated to Shiva. Hidden within the jungle, more than a hundred brick temples still stand, each with its own quiet story. Among the most memorable are Prasat Yeay Peau, wrapped in legend, and Prasat Tao, where stone lions still guard the ruins.
From there, the trip continues to Kuh Nokor Temple, another remarkable site dating back to the 10th–11th centuries under King Suryavarman I. Built from laterite and carefully restored during the French colonial era, the temple features a central shrine decorated with a detailed sandstone lintel showing Indra riding his three-headed elephant, Airavata.
Before returning to Phnom Penh, the journey takes a lively turn at Skun Market—better known as the “Spider Market.” Here, vendors proudly display baskets of fried tarantulas, grasshoppers, and scorpions, offering a glimpse into Cambodia’s more adventurous food traditions.
The day ends back in the capital, with travelers dropped off at their hotel—carrying not just photos of ancient temples but also memories of Cambodia’s fascinating history and vibrant culture.
